Massage and the Wellness Model

Massage Massage is the manual manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, performed using the hands of the therapist, in order to achieve therapeutic benefits. Massage has been practiced as early in history as 3,000 B.C. by the Chinese and the Egyptians. Modern Massage is considered to have two major schools of thought and technique, Eastern massage and Western massage. The Wellness Model The Wellness Model was developed by Dr. John Travis in the 1970's. According to the Wellness Model, the human body consists of individual systems working together synergistically to provide optimal health to the whole being. Our emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical systems all rely on the function of each other to produce an optimally functioning human being. The Wellness Model can be depicted as a continuum along an arrow. The midpoint of the arrow represents the moderate level of well-being experienced by most individuals. At this level of wellness, an individual can function in everyday life without too much difficulty. To the left side of moderate wellness is a gradual decline into signs and symptoms of disease and eventually ending in premature death. To the right side of moderate wellness is high-level wellness. High-level wellness is achieved by moving beyond the average level of wellness, represented by adequate daily functioning, through the stages of awareness, education, and growth. High-level wellness is achieved largely through self motivation for an expansion of consciousness, expression, and productivity. The Wellness Model exhibits the potential for growth or decline that exists in all individuals.
