Massage Therapy for Supraspinatus Sprains

Massage therapy is a fantastic treatment for shoulder pain and supraspinatus tendinosis. People often call their pain a rotator cuff sprain. The rotator cuff is a combination of four muscle that stabilize the humeral head inside the scapula. The most commonly injured muscle and tendon belongs to the supraspinatus muscle. The supraspinatus muscle begins on the top of the scapulae and runs to the top and side of the humerus. Think of the tip of the shoulder on the side. The tendon of the supraspinatus runs under a bone before it attaches to the humerus (upper arm bone). Because of the close proximity to the bone above it, it tends to "rub" against the bone, creating irritation, inflammation, pain, soreness, and ultimately tendinosis. The pain usually starts at stiffness and mild dull pain. With time the pain increase to a moderate dull ache and finally sharp stabbing pain. The pain can feel like a sharp stabbing ice pick on the side of the shoulder. The shoulder pain can be very severe when reaching above your head. Non traumatic shoulder pain can more common in people with a forward head and shoulder postures. As the shoulders move forward it places more stress on the supraspinatus muscle when it stabilizes the humerus during shoulder movements. When the shoulder becomes overworked or other rotator cuff muscles become strained, the supraspinatus tendon is more likely to rub against the adjacent bone. Eventually the rubbing produces tendinosis. Since the tendon insert on the side of the humerus, this spot tends to be very sore to the touch.
